Islam is the second largest religion in the world today after Christianity. It has over 1 billion followers (Muslims) spread around the world. There is over 1.5 million in the United Kingdom (Nearly 3% of the population) In Northern Ireland there are now nearly 5,000 Muslims from over 40 countries around the world.
Islam has had a great influence in the world. Many of our numbers and mathematics comes from islamic roots. The first city with street lights in Europe was in Cordoba in Southern Spain which was then Muslim. Tragic events across the world over the past 2 decades have saw a great deal of misunderstanding about what Islam is and what is involved in it.
We are going to investigate in Year 9 what Islam is really all about. |
